Herbal Remedy

The occurrence and development of all kinds of diseases are caused by pathogenic factors acting of human body, which result in the pathologic phenomena such as imbalance between yin and yang, mutual growth and reduction between pathogenic factors and healthy qi, and the disorders of zang and fu organs. The basic principles of treating diseases with Chinese medicinal herbs is to eliminate causes of disease, dispel pathogenic factors or restore the coordination of the functions of zang and fu organs so that excess and deficiency of yin or yang can be corrected and the diseases can be cured.
A prescription is composed of selected herbs and suitable doses based on syndrome differentiation for etiology and composition of therapies in accordance with the principles of formulating a prescription. It serves as a chief means of treating diseases clinically.
The forms of prescription refer to the definite patterns processed, after herbs are made up into a prescription in line with certain compatibility, according to the condition of the patient, the properties of the drugs and the route of administration as well. An appropriate form is indispensable to the action of a prescription and the efficacy of the drugs. The commonly used forms including decoction, powder, pill (honeyed pills or boluses, water-paste pills, paste-pills and condensed pills), granule, tablet, syrup, extract, ointment, plaster, liniment, etc.
